Hot Doggin’ in Newcastle, AU

Harry's Cafe de Wheels
Harry’s Café de Wheels in Newcastle, NSW AU

I was visiting family, who live across the river from Newcastle in Stockton, during the beginning of Hot Dog Month but that didn’t stop me from enjoying a dawg in celebration.

I saw several signs around town advertising 4th of July Hot Dog specials during our midweek visit, none of which were still available. However, my wife and I did enjoy a couple of dogs overlooking Newcastle’s Harbor at Harry’s Café de Wheels

Cili Con Carne & Hotdog de Wheels

This is their Hot Dog with Chili con Carne, which has beans and the House Special, the Hot Dog de Wheels which features mushy peas, chilli con carne and garlic onions with cheese sauce & chilli sauce.

The buns, toppings and frankfurters were all fresh and delicious. While I don’t think mushy peas on hot dogs will be making an appearence here in Philly any time soon it tasted pretty good and so did the beans in the chili con carne.

If you find yourself in Newcastle, or any of the other cities they have stands, I recommend checking them out.

Hot Dog Safari 2014

I Brake For Dogs at Jimmy John'sOur first Safari of 2014 was a trip west to the suburbs of Wilmington DE and Philly PA, to check out the dogs at Deerhead Hot Dogs (Wilmington), Johnnies Dog House (Wilmington) and Jimmy John’s Pipin Hot Sandwiches (West Chester).

Deerhead Hot DogsBe sure to try the chili dog. There’s a good reason their motto is “It’s the Sauce.”

Johnnies Dog HouseHere we are checking out the many doggers that have visited before us.

Jimmy John's Pipin Hot SandwichesThey’ve been Famous For Frankfurters  since 1940, with good reason.

Hot Dog Safari 2013

Hot Dog SafariWe’re ending our month long celebration of Hot Dogs with a Safari to NEPA, to visit a  pair of famous Hot Dog restaurants in Scranton.

We’re also going to stop by a place in Wilkes-Barre that’s been serving dogs since the mid 60’s.

It turns out there are four additional hot dog stands, between Carbondale and Wilkes-Barre. That’s at least seven hot dog stands within an hours drive… this place seems like a Hot Dog Paradise! We plan on sampling as many dogs as we can while we’re up there.

On our way back, time permitting, we’ll be stopping off in downtown Allentown to visit another famous local Hot Dog joint.  Here’s our itinerary, italicised restaurants are optional:
